CATULLO CAVES AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF SIRMIONE

The Catullo Caves located in the heart of Sirmione conceal a secret: while at first glance they may appear to be made of rock, a closer look reveals that they are the remains of an ancient Roman villa dating back to the Augustan era. The ruins were coined “caves” by the first travellers of the 15th century who, seeing the stones covered in vegetation, thought they were real natural caves. Not far from the historical finds is an archaeological museum that preserves the architectural elements, mosaics, frescoes and stucco decorations that have remained intact for centuries.
